Designing student accommodation can be a tricky balancing act. Operators look to maximise lettable space and focus on things like maintenance, management facilities and the lifetime costs of the building; students have high expectations of creature comforts; and the accommodation has to be marketed to parents, who are usually paying the bills.

The answer is to provide cost-effective solutions that differentiate through design. So low to no-maintenance finishes can be complemented by Philippe Starck loos. Standardised kitchen units produce economies of scale, while money invested in good sound insulation (the number one complaint about student accommodation is paper-thin walls!) give the privacy required for a room to work as a space to live and study in.
