The practice took on the delivery of this new extension at QEII SEN (Special Educational Need) School, which is part of Westminster City Council’s secondary education building programme and provides educational and therapeutic support for children and young people with severe and complex learning difficulties. New accommodation includes a reception, classrooms, staff offices, resource centre, hydrotherapy pool and a sensory garden, which provide a fantastic learning environment for the pupils.
The DMA team worked with Sixth Form pupils to develop the interior designs and colour schemes. Bright colours have been used throughout with feature walls to draw attention to teaching areas as focal points. Colour coding aids navigation and access, with different colour schemes on each floor and stylised pictorial signs. As well as the sensory garden, the building has an extensive green ‘living’ roof and sedum planting along its elevations.
Designed using BIM (Building Information Modeling) software, with the structural and architectural models fully integrated, the building was delivered early and within budget.
