Open City

This initiative aims to raise awareness amongst young people of the merits of good architecture and design and the positive impact this can make on our lives. Working with Year 9 students at Highshore School, a mixed SEN school in Peckham, Anna Davies, Ruth Queally and P.T. Andrew de Silva have been part of a volunteer team working with the pupils and staff.

Initially visiting Kings Place, as an example of a multi-use public venue, the pupils took part in workshops on scale, acoustics, lighting and structure and were then asked to develop a library that they would like to use. Taking Peckham Library (local to the school) as a starting point, the pupils developed an imaginative design and built a fantastically detailed model that extended the existing building and incorporated sports facilities and cultural amenities including a cinema. This will be entered into a London wide competition for all the schools that have taken part. The practice wishes to thank Highshore School and Malcolm Dickson, Design and Planning Manager in LB Camden’s Estate Regeneration Team who has given DMA the opportunity to get involved with this enjoyable and worthwhile project for the last two years.
