Oaklands School

Client: Bouygues UK
Status: Completed December 2011

The project comprises a new building, as well as the comprehensive refurbishment of two existing buildings, providing accommodation and improved teaching spaces for 600 secondary school pupils as part of Tower Hamlets’ secondary education building programme. Working with Bouygues UK, the first phase of the project was completed in August 2010.

The new two storey building is planned to maximise the potential of this tight urban site and the playground it sits on has been replaced with a colourful, accessible roof space for students with a sculptural light lantern at its centre. Another existing roof playground on the Arts & Technology building has been reinstated, with the introduction of benches, planters and ‘windows’ providing views across London and much improved external recreation space. A ‘street canopy’ protects the space between the old and new building at ground level, sheltering access between the buildings.
