This project is inspired by the secret gardens of Marylebone that can be glimpsed behind its elegant formal façades, tucked away in quiet mews streets, on secluded roof terraces and prettily planted balconies.
The five-storey building wraps around the site to enclose a private courtyard garden, changing and stepping down in size as it turns to maximise light into its 27 one-bed flats and the neighbouring building. The façades reflect the surrounding Georgian and Victorian architecture in materials and geometry, with a contemporary interpretation of the formal Georgian terraces on one side, becoming less formal where it faces open green space and culminating in the courtyard garden with its traditional white glazed bricks and terraces that step back to give a light, airy space.
An entrance slot punches through the façade giving glimpses of the garden to passers-by. The apartments benefit from an additional three shared roof gardens, designed as ‘green roofs’ to encourage bio-diversity.
The development embraces the scale, materials and detail that give Marylebone its own special charm and character.
