Isleworth Hotel – alteration of a 1960s office block

Client: Wicklow Enterprises
Status: Proposal March 2011

This proposal strips an existing six storey office building down to its frame and gives it an entirely new look. Constructed in the 1960s, the original building presented a dour face to the surrounding area.

The new, alternating pattern of brick and white laminated panels plays against the staggered windows of the hotel rooms on the upper levels to break up the mass of the building and enliven the regularity of the façades. The height of the building is similarly disguised by continuing this pattern up and over the zinc roof cladding.

The ground floor, which houses retail units and leisure facilities, is opened up with large glazed panels. Lightweight awnings and planters create an inviting, protected walkway along the street and a curved glass screen gives a defined and welcoming entrance to the hotel.
