Hallfield Estate was designated a conservation area by Westminster Council in 1990 and was spot listed in June 2011. Designed by Tecton in 1947 and constructed under the supervision of Lyndsay Drake and Denys Lasdun, it has long been considered of ‘special interest’. Along with Churchill Gardens, it was one of the largest and most ambitious post war housing schemes in London, providing housing for 2,362 people in six 10-storey blocks and eight 6-storey blocks, as well as garages, shops, laundries, a pub and primary school.
CityWest Homes are responsible for the maintenance and management of this estate. This involves upgrading the fabric of the buildings, making homes more comfortable and energy efficient. DMA are working with them to provide full survey drawings of the estate and information to develop planning applications for the replacement of all windows and doors, which are being reinstated in the original colour scheme. The challenge is to balance practical needs with conserving the original, whilst all being finely tuned in terms of cost.
