This glass staircase tower connects two separate buildings of the Grey Coat Hospital School (now a specialist language college) and is part of Westminster City Council’s secondary education building programme. The levels of the Grade II listed 17th Century school building and the 1950s extension didn’t match, but the new circulation tower connects the buildings at every level, greatly improving accessibility and providing a transition between them. The traditional school colours have been used with the lift core painted a deep maroon, as the stair tower mediates between new and old buildings.
