Client: CityWest Homes
Status: proposal complete May 2010
This was a rare opportunity to be able to make a proposal for new homes set against such an elegant backdrop as these Georgian terraces and garden squares. Our scheme emphasises the garden heritage of the area. It adds to the green space and better integrates the existing garden, improving accessibility for local residents.
The five storey building, containing nine flats, is a direct response to the buildings around it. It uses materials and details typical to the area – London stock brick, pre-cast stone copings, white stained timber (referencing the white stucco facades of the surrounding buildings) and white painted wooden window frames whose proportions echo traditional Georgian sash windows. Its form is extruded from the adjoining building, completing it as a semi-detached piece.
Existing mature trees on the site are retained and balconies are purposefully positioned amongst trees. A louvred screen directs views away from the neighbours as well as providing views from the street through to the garden foliage. A green ‘grasscrete’ ramp to the carpark links the central garden to the street.
