College Park School

Client: Bouygues UK
Status: Completed December 2011

The practice took on the delivery of this new school which is part of Westminster City Council’s education building programme and provides education and support for pupils with special educational needs and Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD). It is on a constrained site in the Bayswater Conservation Area.

In plan, the building comprises two interlocking L-shapes that enclose a central play area and form new street frontages along Garway Road and Monmouth Road. As part of the planning process, we re-designed the Monmouth Road elevation. It is a contemporary take on the traditional streetscape, using London stock brick and render to match the surrounding buildings, but in reverse, with the bricks at ground floor level and render above. Inside, a strategy of toned down colours, developed in line with ASD guidance, help navigation and draw attention to teaching areas as focal points.

The design has been carefully engineered to balance the aesthetic requirements with tight budget constraints. It has a green roof and we are working to achieve an excellent BREEAM sustainability rating.
